Skills I Gained From Blogging

Adobe Photoshop: So I've used Photoshop before blogging, but I never stuck with it because it was just for class. Now I can't see my life without it and don't mind making a payment every month. I make all my Pinterest images, collages, illustrations (along with Illustrator) and quotes with this awesome program. Now I can confidently show my skills when interviewing for a position. It has stepped up the quality of my images and helped my overall design.

Social Media Management: Maintaining a social media presence across multiple platforms is exhausting for one person. Thankfully there are so many tools to make it easier. I've used Hootsuite, Buffer, Planoly and so much more. A lot of marketing jobs list this as a skill and thanks to blogging, I'm confident while using these services. I've also learned what time is best to post on each platform.

Branding: Your brand is everything you want people to associate with you. My brand is all about creativity and I love inspiring others. I want to attract readers that share this same passion which is why I show this throughout my blog. This sets the tone for what brand and networking opportunities will reach out to me. It took me awhile to figure this out, but now when I post, I genuinely feel connected to my content and readers.

What skills have you learned from blogging?

How Uncertainty Can Help Your Blog

I'm sure you've all read the same story about how bloggers got their start. It all began on a whim as a creative outlet from whatever they needed an escape from. Eventually, the realization that blogging can be more than hobby sets in and now it's time to get serious. But where does one begin? With thousands of blogs and numerous niches, the journey to making a mark in the blogging world seems daunting.

With all this uncertainty, it's easy to back out, but it can be used to your advantage. When I started my blog I had no real focus. I tried DIY's and while I like to think I'm creative, crafts aren't my passion. I experimented with makeup, but let's face it, I've been using the same 3 drugstore products for years and don't even get me started on hair. This doesn't mean I won't post about these topics, they're just not my focus.

Uncertainty led me to trying out various things. I was able to find what I truly loved and I'm comfortable with admitting that I didn't know for awhile. Uncertainty forces us to step outside of our comfort zone and try something new. Not every venture will be met with success, but it puts us one step closer to discovering it.

Uncertainty is messy and that's why it scares us. If you've been here since the beginning, you know what I mean. I changed my header more times than I can count and my design skills were....well nonexistent. My photos were awful and I couldn't decide on a layout. Needless to say, I didn't know what I was doing, but hey look at me now! I use Photoshop on a regular basis, learned the art of taking a pretty flat lay and create cute illustrations.

Imagine if you lived a life where you only took the chances you knew would work out. You wouldn't be where you're at today! "Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen."

Inspiring Quotes from Disney Movies

I'm back with another post to inspire you throughout the week. When I began searching I thought, "What better place to look than my favorite Disney movies!" These adorable movies made me laugh, cry, smile and feel encouraged to pursue my dreams. Somedays I can't wait to have children of my own to watch movies with and bond over.

My favorite movie is hands down Mulan. She's independent, resilient, compassionate and courageous. I wanted to be, however, Princess Jasmine. I dreamed of having long luxurious black hair, a palace and pet tiger to accompany me all day long. What Disney movie and quote is your favorite? Comment below!

Dress for the Life you Want

We finally made it to Friyay! I finished my first week of spring semester and only have... a lot more to go. The good news is this weekend is a long one! On Monday I decided to dress up more than usual. There was no real reason other than to step up my fashion. After I was finished putting my look together I felt so confident. I had on a nice button down, dress pants, a fur vest and simple accessories. Most days I put on a t-shirt and jeans like every other college student trying to make it to class in one piece.

Who knew clothes could make me walk a little taller, hold my head a little higher and believe in myself a little more! Since then I've decided to dress up a couple days out of the week for an extra boost of confidence. I would like to get more into makeup as well. Right now I have a very simple routine that works for me. A little concealer, mascara and bronzer gets me out the door in a few minutes. For Christmas my mother got me some makeup and I'm excited to experiment! I love having the option to change my look so why not! Anyways, let's get back to the clothes.

A lot of people might keep it casual because dressing up seems costly. One one hand it can be, but if you know where to look you can have a whole new wardrobe. Check out the items below for inspiration!

One of my goals is to tap into my creative side more. In my pursuit, I have found lots of great resources and will be sharing them each week. Let's start with fonts!

Finding the perfect font can be quite the task. With hundreds of websites it's easy to get overwhelmed. I'll be sharing my favorites to make the search easier. I love brush fonts and incorporate them often when creating. Most of these fonts are for personal use only so please be sure to read their terms first. Have fun designing and let me know which one is your favorite!

January Wish List and Music Favorites

It's a new year, but my desire for clothes and beauty products have remained the same! As basic as it sounds, I think I want to step out of my comfort zone and try different styles. Every now and then I get the urge to switch it up whether it's fashion, makeup or hair. One year I went from red hair, back to my natural color then to jet black. Needless to say, I'm not afraid of some change.

You may notice a theme of sparkle and shine with the products I've picked. With the festivity of a new year it seemed to be the perfect fit! With the help of a couple YouTube tutorials, I should be able to create a semi-decent look!

It's been awhile since I've shared a playlist and thought, "Why not share it now?" Some of these are oldies, but goodies. I'll never get tired of hearing Justin Nozukas' "After Tonight" or JP Coopers' "Satellite". I hope you find something new that you like!

Stop Overthinking and Start Achieving

We are almost finished with the first week of 2017! With your resolutions or intentions thought out and written down, it's time to put the plan into motion. Sounds easy right? I wish, or else I wouldn't have a laundry list of goals that haven't been touched. The one thing that consistently hinders me is overthinking. I get scared and worry about every little thing that could go wrong. It will be the most dramatic drawn out fear that doesn't even make sense. In the end, I'm only left with regret and disappointment.

If you're like me, I have a few tips to help us both make the most of 2017! First, get rid of any negative people in your life. Taking chances makes us feel vulnerable enough so the last thing someone needs is a debbie downer. Constructive criticism is appreciated, but if they're not helping or building you up they have to go.

Next, sit down and think about your fears in a rational manner. Is the worst possible scenario really going to happen, or are you just getting cold feet? Most of the things we worry about never end up happening! If you're making smart choices, realistically you'll be fine. Try thinking of what could go right. Change your perspective and focus on all the wonderful ways your life can change!

Understand that time will never be perfect. I jumped into blogging three years ago and have loved every minute! Sometimes the best things happen spontaneously (depending on what it is of course)! The only time we have guaranteed is right now. Live in the moment and make the most of what you have.

Lastly, be aware. Since I know I over think, I can take steps towards calming down. I create the thoughts in my head so I have the power to change how I'm thinking. I try to reflect on what is already working in my life to reinforce my abilities when I let my guard down.

I hope these tips help you achieve your dreams this year!

Set New Year's Intentions Instead of Resolutions

It's that time again. We buy planners, make vision boards and buy gym memberships to embark on various resolutions. Some may be brand new and others are being attempted for the second or third time (but who's counting right). I was thinking back on my resolutions from last year and some I didn't even get to. Not because I couldn't, I just didn't. I never made them a priority and before you knew it, 2016 was over.

That's why this year I am setting intentions rather than resolutions. Intentions have a deeper connection to our personal lives and aspirations. They're on our mind everyday and we want to do them. Intentions resonate with who we are and give us purpose. A lot of my resolutions were made without considering what I truly want and what matters in life. It's nice to have a certain number of followers, a fancy car and a prestigious job title, but none of that matters if you still feel empty inside.

To begin, start asking yourself, "What's missing?" After you come home from class, work, the gym and running errands what is still tugging at your heart? From there, write down what you're feeling. Acknowledgement is key. Once you have a clear understanding, taking steps will be second nature.

Intentions are great because they embrace the present while resolutions sometimes leaves us with feelings of inadequacy. With intentions you can achieve something wonderful everyday. Being more vulnerable, kind and spontaneous are examples that have no deadline.

In the end whether you're setting intentions or resolutions, it's never too late to begin again!

Create a Beautiful Social Media Brand with these Templates

A huge part of building an audience is being active on social media. I made the mistake of neglecting this part early on and have a lot of catching up to do. With thousands of bloggers on social media, it's important to stand out and have an appealing brand design. An ideal design is original, whether you make it or someone else. It will set you apart and leave a mark amongst the others (in a later post I'll show you how to make your own).

If you don't want to design your own or pay someone a pretty penny for a unique design, templates are the next best thing. Even though they can be purchased by anyone, there are ways you can add your own touch. A few changes include: using various fonts, choosing different colors and incorporating your own images.

Since I've been a blogger (over three years now) Creative Market has been my go-to for design resources. Running a blog is a full-time job and templates can save you time and energy while not skipping out on quality. You can find hundreds of templates to suit your branding desires. A few minutes of searching and you'll find minimal, girly, chic and simple layouts.
